After 40, your body starts sending quieter warnings. You might feel fine and still have blood work that tells a different story. That is why I push annual labs pretty hard for patients in Cypress. The goal is not to scare you. The goal is to catch things while they are still easy to manage.
These are five labs I think most patients over 40 should have checked at least once a year:
A1C: This looks at your average blood sugar over the last three months. It is one of the best ways to catch prediabetes before it turns into diabetes. In Southeast Texas, where diabetes rates run above the national average, this number matters.
Lipid panel: This is your cholesterol picture, including LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. It is not just about total cholesterol anymore. I want to see the breakdown, because two patients with the same total number can have very different risk.
Comprehensive metabolic panel: This checks kidney function, liver function, and electrolytes. It is a broad snapshot, and it is often where I find the first clue that something is off.
TSH: Your thyroid controls a lot more than people think. Weight, energy, mood, and even cholesterol can shift if your thyroid is underactive. A simple TSH test can explain symptoms that otherwise do not add up.
Vitamin D: Even in sunny Texas, low vitamin D is common. It affects bone health, energy, and immune function. I see it a lot in patients who work indoors most of the day.
One more thing. Labs are only useful if someone actually explains them to you. I have had patients come in with years of blood work and no idea what any of it meant. That is a failure of the system, not the patient. When you get your results, you should walk out of the visit knowing what is normal, what is borderline, and what you are going to do about it.
If you are over 40 and have not had blood work in the past year, that is a good reason to schedule a visit. Not because something is definitely wrong, but because knowing your numbers is better than guessing.
